The Xrysoi — in full, οι χρυσοί πολεμιστές, “the Golden Warriors” — are an Ancient Greek-inspired LARP group focused on hoplite warfare, mercenary play, camp life, formation combat and mythic character-driven roleplay.
We are not a pure historical reenactment group. Instead, we portray a fantasy mercenary company whose visual style, culture and atmosphere draw heavily upon Ancient Greece: shields and spears, chitons and helmets, the phalanx, divine omens, sacrificial fires, wine, dust and the long road back to a lost homeland.
In character, the Xrysoi hail from Aurea, a fallen, sun-blessed kingdom shaped by gold, blood, honour and betrayal. After the collapse of their homeland, they were driven into exile as the loyal companions and sworn protectors of the displaced Princess Kleio.
They are not radiant chosen heroes. They are ordinary people who took up arms because necessity demanded it: mercenaries, survivors, believers and doubters, veterans, priests, oracles, members of the camp retinue and all those who are not yet willing to abandon their homeland.
Our play is built around three main pillars:
- the military core,
- mythic and religious play,
- and the camp retinue.
The military core consists of hoplites and ekdromoi: heavily and lightly equipped fighters who stand together in formation. At the heart of this style of play are the shield wall, clear commands, training, discipline and the feeling of genuinely belonging to a military company.
Alongside them are priests, oracles and other mythic roles. They interpret omens, conduct rituals, make guilt, purification and sacred oaths part of the game, and give the group a deeper religious and spiritual identity.
The camp retinue supports the company through logistics, crafts, healing, administration, trade, record-keeping and noble or courtly attendants. However, one principle always remains clear: the hoplite formation is the heart of the group.
The Xrysoi are deliberately designed as a roleplaying community rather than merely a shared costume concept. We want to appear just as convincing in camp as we do in battle.
This includes eating together, standing watch, maintaining equipment, working around the camp, conducting rituals, arguing and reconciling, celebrating together and portraying the rough but deeply loyal life of a travelling mercenary company.
Those who play with us do not simply receive the visual appearance of a hoplite group. They become part of a clear and coherent structure: Strategos, Hyios, formation, retinue, oath and common purpose.
Visually, we draw upon Ancient Greece and especially the image of the hoplite: aspis, dory, linothorax, chiton, himation, Corinthian-inspired helmets, kopis and xiphos.
At the same time, our concept remains practical for LARP and adaptable to different settings. In a fantasy setting such as Vier Wege, oracles, divine signs, supernatural interpretations and greater mythological forces may all play an important role.
In more historically grounded or low-fantasy settings, such as Epic Empires, these elements can be reduced, allowing the group to function equally well as an Ancient Greek-inspired mercenary company or hoplite unit.
We mainly attend events in the German-speaking LARP scene, with a strong focus on Austria and Germany. The concept works particularly well at fantasy LARPs, campaign events, Mediterranean or Ancient-inspired settings, courtly and exile plots, mercenary scenarios, battle events, immersive camp-based games and events where character play, atmosphere and group interaction are central.
Part of our background is closely connected to Aurea, Genesia and the wider setting of Vier Wege. At the same time, the concept is deliberately flexible enough to be integrated meaningfully into other events and settings.
Our style of play is aimed at people who enjoy committed group play: the shield wall rather than lone heroics, camp life rather than simply turning up, and clearly defined roles rather than complete arbitrariness.
New players can join as ekdromoi, members of the camp retinue or other suitable supporting characters. At present, however, we are particularly interested in recruiting warrior characters who want to become part of the military core.
Should this sound interesting to you, I would be very happy to hear from you and discuss the concept further.
